S&P 500 Futures Rise as Earnings Season Kicks Off with Big Banks; Investors Will Focus on Guidance More Than Beats Amid Higher Oil and Rates

Stock Futures Slip Monday After Best Week Since Early August; Dow -0.4%, S&P -0.4%, Nasdaq -0.7%; Meta +13% Weekly on Muse AI; Oil +1% (Trump Iran Ceasefire Rejection); Treasury 10-Year 5.225% (2007 High)

  • Futures are drifting higher Monday morning, but the real story this week isn’t the rally—it’s the earnings. S&P 500 futures climbed 0.33%, Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.45%, and Dow futures added 0.35% as investors prepared for a week flooded with earnings reports. The major averages had a strong week: the Dow and S&P 500 each posted their second positive week in three, while the Nasdaq Composite extended its streak to four straight weeks of gains. Tech stocks drove the rally last week despite headwinds from higher oil prices and rising yields. Now the focus shifts to whether companies can actually deliver when confronted with $104 oil and a 10-year Treasury yield that breached 2002 levels last week.
  • This week’s earnings lineup is dominated by big banks. Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo all report this week. What they say in earnings calls will set the tone for the broader season. Analysts expect the S&P 500 to post 29.6% earnings growth in Q3—the fourth straight quarter above 25% thanks to the AI data center buildout. That’s a huge number. But as one portfolio manager noted, the real test is whether companies can “pass along” higher costs to customers while continuing to grow margins. Can banks maintain net interest margins with rates staying elevated? Can companies keep raising prices without killing demand? Those answers matter far more than whether the headline number beats or misses.
  • Oil and inflation are the wildcards. Brent crude is trading above $104 per barrel after Trump’s Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire announcement over the weekend kept prices elevated. For airlines, shipping companies, and manufacturers, that translates to higher fuel costs. Meanwhile, the consumer and producer price indexes arrive Wednesday and Thursday this week. If inflation comes in hot, it could reverse the earnings euphoria and trigger another yield spike. If inflation moderates, it removes a key risk and gives the earnings rally room to extend.
  • Geopolitical risk is creeping back. Trump said over the weekend he’s considering joining Saudi Arabia in its fight against Tehran-backed Houthis in Yemen after another deadly airport attack in Riyadh. That kind of escalation would spike oil higher and add to corporate cost pressures. For now, oil prices are holding steady on the ceasefire narrative, but any new Middle East headlines could change that quickly. Investors are hoping earnings strength—29.6% growth is nothing to dismiss—can power through these headwinds, but guidance on forward costs and margin pressure will determine whether that optimism holds.

What Happened?

S&P 500 futures rose 0.33% early Monday following a winning week for the major averages, as investors prepared for a busy earnings week and inflation data. Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 0.45%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 184 points, or 0.35%. The Dow and S&P 500 each posted their second positive week in three, while the Nasdaq Composite extended its winning streak to four consecutive weeks. The rally was driven primarily by strength in technology stocks, despite headwinds from higher oil prices and rising Treasury yields. In Asia, South Korea’s Kospi fell 3.65%, while the small-cap Kosdaq dropped 4.83%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.76%, and mainland China’s CSI 300 closed 0.68% lower. Markets in Japan were closed for a holiday. This week, big banks including Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo are expected to post third-quarter earnings results. According to FactSet data, the S&P 500 is anticipated to post 29.6% earnings growth for the quarter, marking the fourth consecutive quarter with earnings growth exceeding 25%, driven by strength in AI data center spending. Key economic data—September consumer and producer price indexes—are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Oil prices remain elevated above $104 per barrel following Trump’s weekend announcement of a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire, though President Trump also indicated consideration of joining Saudi Arabia’s military efforts against Houthis in Yemen.

Why It Matters?

Earnings season determines whether recent stock market gains are sustainable or built on thin air. With the S&P 500 posting 29.6% expected growth, the bar is high but achievable. The challenge isn’t beating numbers—it’s convincing investors that companies can sustain profitability when confronted with real headwinds. Banks are the litmus test. They earn more from higher rates but lose lending volume and deposit margins compress. Oil above $104 hurts operating margins for anyone with fuel costs. Rising wages and competition for workers cut into margins further. For Q3, the bigger question isn’t whether the number beats or misses—it’s whether guidance for Q4 and 2027 suggests margin pressure is temporary or structural. If banks guide conservatively and warn about cost pressures, that cascades into guidance cuts across the board. If they guide optimistically and suggest margin resilience, the rally extends. The inflation data Wednesday and Thursday also matter enormously. If CPI comes in hot, it signals the Fed might hike rates further, which would pressure growth stocks and extend yield pain. If inflation is cooling, it removes the last major bear case and lets earnings strength drive equities higher.

What’s Next?

Watch JPMorgan Chase’s earnings Tuesday morning. It’s typically the first major bank to report and sets the tone for the rest of the week. If JPM beats but guides down or warns about weakness, the entire week’s narrative flips negative. If JPM beats and guides neutral to positive, expect the rest of the banks to follow the same pattern. Monitor the conference calls and forward guidance specifically. Did management mention pricing power, margin pressure, or cost inflation? What did they say about consumer spending, loan demand, and credit quality? Those qualitative comments matter as much as the headline numbers. Track the PPI data Wednesday and Thursday. If both CPI and PPI come in above expectations, yields will spike and the earnings rally could reverse. If they come in line or cooler, that validates the “soft landing” narrative and supports continued gains. Watch oil prices through the week. If Trump escalates Middle East rhetoric further and oil spikes above $105, that adds cost pressure to guidance warnings. If oil stays below $100, that removes a near-term risk. Finally, monitor Fed speakers this week. If any Fed official hints at further rate hikes, that could undercut the earnings rally even on strong beats.
