A Network Disruption in One New Jersey Facility Is Affecting Every Nasdaq US Equity Feed
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Nasdaq warned clients they may see gaps in equity market data as it experiences a network disruption affecting all of its US equities markets, including Nasdaq, Nasdaq Texas and Nasdaq PSX, across all feeds.
  • The issue originated from the company’s facility in Carteret, New Jersey. Clients were advised to use Chicago feeds as a backup, which remain unaffected, and to submit recovery requests for any missing data.
  • No cause has been stated and the disruption was ongoing at the time of the notice.
  • Nasdaq shares were quoted at 93.64, slightly above where they traded earlier in the session, so markets were not treating the outage as materially damaging.

What Happened?

The information comes from a market system status message on Nasdaq’s website.

Why It Matters?

Geographic redundancy worked as designed, with Chicago unaffected and available as a fallback, and that is the reassuring part. The less reassuring part is what the incident reveals about concentration: a disruption at a single New Jersey facility degraded every US equity feed the company operates simultaneously. A large share of American equity market infrastructure sits in a small number of data centres in that state, which is efficient for latency and creates correlated exposure for everyone connected to it. The timing matters more than the outage itself. From December 6, Nasdaq, NYSE Arca and Cboe EDGX extend trading into a 9pm to 4am overnight session, moving toward 23-hour weekday markets. A feed disruption during regular hours is manageable because desks are staffed, liquidity is deep and errors are caught quickly. The same event at two in the morning, in a session where SEC data shows 15 stocks accounted for half of all overnight volume and institutional participation is minimal, is a materially different problem. Exchanges have seven weeks to demonstrate the resilience those hours require. For anyone running automated strategies or risk systems, gaps in market data mean stale or absent prices feeding models that assume continuity, and Nasdaq instructing clients to request recovery for missing data confirms the record itself has holes that need filling afterward.

What Next?

Nasdaq’s explanation of the cause is the disclosure that matters, and whether the disruption recurs is the test of whether the fix is understood. Watch whether order flow shifted measurably to NYSE or Cboe venues during the period, since that quantifies the commercial cost of an outage. Any regulatory interest would focus on resilience standards ahead of the December extension to overnight trading. For market participants, the practical step is checking whether their own data and execution records contain gaps requiring recovery requests.
