- South Korea’s KOSPI fell almost 4%, accompanied by data centre company Elice tumbling around 30% on its debut, one of the weakest listings in the country’s history.
- That is the fourth AI infrastructure financing to fail or be pulled in a fortnight, after Firmus Grid withdrew a roughly $5 billion IPO when investors balked at its valuation, AirTrunk postponed a Singapore listing to next year, and Nscale continues seeking $3 billion having built under 1% of its targeted capacity. Public markets have now refused or punished these listings in Australia, Singapore and South Korea.
- Monday’s rebound lasted a day. CoreWeave fell 4% in premarket trading after rising 3% on a Goldman Sachs upgrade, with Cipher Mining down 2% and IREN down 3%, both former bitcoin miners that pivoted into AI hosting and now trade with the sector.
- The cross-asset pattern is risk-off with one anomaly. Treasuries attracted defensive flows, with the long-dated bond ETF up 0.5%, while bitcoin edged lower above $81,000 and gold slipped almost 1% to just above $4,110. Oil moved the other way, with Brent and WTI each climbing 2%.
What Happened?
Technology stocks were broadly lower, with the Nasdaq-tracking ETF trading down.
Why It Matters?
A one-day bounce on an analyst upgrade that reverses immediately describes positioning rather than reassessment. Monday’s rally came as the semiconductor benchmark snapped an eight-day losing streak, its longest in 18 years, which is the kind of technical exhaustion that produces a bounce regardless of fundamentals. The concerns driving the selloff are about financing costs, credit spreads and returns on capital, none of which changed between Monday and Tuesday, and a Goldman upgrade does not address them. Gold falling during a risk-off session is the detail worth noting because it keeps happening. Equities down, Treasuries up, bitcoin down and gold down is not what the conventional haven framework predicts, and it is the second time this month the metal has declined while investors sought safety. Long-dated Treasuries took the defensive flow instead, which is consistent with gold trading on real rates rather than on fear. For anyone holding bullion as portfolio insurance, this is now a repeated observation rather than a one-off. The geographic spread of the IPO failures matters more than any single deal. Four AI infrastructure financings have been withdrawn, postponed or punished across three countries in two weeks, which rules out an explanation based on US sentiment or any particular company’s disclosures. Investors in different markets are reaching the same conclusion about the same category. Nscale’s attempt is the next test and it is seeking money on a weaker build record than Firmus had. Oil rising while everything else falls is the inflation problem reasserting itself a week before the Federal Reserve meets, with September consumer prices already up 3.7% on fuel costs.
What Next?
The Federal Reserve meets on October 27 and 28, and oil climbing into that meeting complicates the inflation picture markets had begun to discount. Watch whether AI credit spreads widen alongside the equity weakness, since Goldman’s desk noted they sit at the widest levels of the year. Meta, Tesla and Netflix report this week. For AI infrastructure financing specifically, Nscale’s listing and Blue Owl’s $6 billion loan for Stack are the next two tests of appetite.
