A Fed President Warns the AI Buildout May Be Overheating the Economy, as CPI Rises 0.6% on Fuel

  • US consumer prices rose 0.6% from the previous month, the most since April, driven largely by surging fuel costs with underlying price pressures also increasing. Treasury yields spiked on Wednesday before reversing the move entirely on Thursday as a technology-driven equity rout spurred haven demand for bonds.
  • Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee called the data discouraging and warned that the buildout of infrastructure related to artificial intelligence may also be overheating the economy, adding it is too soon to know whether rates are high enough to deliver the 2% inflation target.
  • Gold rose as much as 1.1% to around $4,151 an ounce, recouping nearly all of the previous session’s losses, with silver up 1% at $56.15 and platinum and palladium also advancing. The dollar was 0.3% lower.
  • The longer picture is less supportive. Gold has lost more than 20% since the US-Iran war began in late February, the conflict that disrupted energy supplies, triggered global inflation and prompted monetary tightening.

What Happened?

Christopher Wong of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp said gold’s rise was supported by bond yields on a rollercoaster, reversing the earlier surge entirely. Traders increased bets the hotter-than-expected inflation data may push the Federal Reserve to raise rates again later this month. Investors will look for final guidance from Chairman Kevin Warsh, speaking at IMF meetings in Bangkok before the central bank’s media blackout begins Saturday ahead of the October 27-28 meeting.

Why It Matters?

Goolsbee’s warning is the most consequential statement here and it changes the frame for AI capital spending. A sitting Federal Reserve president has publicly identified the AI buildout as a possible source of economic overheating, which moves it from an equity market question to a monetary policy one. The channels are already visible in the data: Samsung is quoting roughly three times current rates for HBM4 memory, ISM services prices paid reached their highest since July 2022, semiconductor imports jumped a record $2.4 billion in a month, and consumer electronics prices are rising for the first time in a generation. If that view gains support within the committee, AI investment becomes something the Federal Reserve is explicitly responding to, and the sector’s cost of capital rises because of its own spending. Gold falling more than 20% during a war that disrupted global energy supplies is the counterintuitive fact worth sitting with. The standard assumption is that bullion rises on geopolitical conflict, and it has done the opposite, because the same conflict produced inflation that produced monetary tightening. Gold yields nothing, so when short rates sit near 4% and the 10-year above 5.3%, the opportunity cost of holding it overwhelms the haven bid. For anyone holding gold as insurance against conflict, the lesson is that it hedges monetary debasement rather than war, and it loses to rising real rates regardless of the headlines. The intraday reversal is also worth understanding correctly. Yields fell back not because the policy outlook improved but because equities sold off and money moved into bonds for safety. That makes the bond rally a function of equity stress rather than a change in the rate path, and it would unwind if stocks stabilise. With a December increase fully priced and the September print this hot, the direction of policy has not changed.

What Next?

Warsh speaks in Bangkok before the blackout begins Saturday, making it the last official guidance before the October 27-28 decision. Watch whether other officials echo Goolsbee on AI-driven overheating, since a second or third voice would make it a committee view rather than one president’s observation. The split between headline and underlying inflation matters, because fuel-driven increases are supply-side and respond poorly to rate rises, whereas broader pressure justifies tightening. For gold, the real rate path remains the dominant variable rather than geopolitics, and the metal has already demonstrated which of the two it follows.
