MSCI Has Now Put Two Emerging Markets on Notice, and Indonesian Stocks Fell the Most in 28 Years
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp

Note: these are hedge fund managers presenting ideas at a conference. Each pitch describes a position the manager holds.

  • Indonesian stocks fell the most in 28 years after MSCI warned the country’s emerging-market status was in jeopardy, the second such warning from the index provider within days after it froze index changes for Turkish equities and set a June 2027 deadline there.
  • Thea Jamison of Change Global Investment argued PT Telkom Indonesia already fulfils MSCI’s requirements, having implemented a plan to streamline the business, and sees roughly 90% upside given its dominant domestic market share.
  • The bullish Japanese pitches shared a theme. Hideki Kinuhata of Silq Capital backed Makino Milling Machine on aerospace demand broadening into space, satellites and defence, expecting 80% earnings growth over three years to March 2028. Riho Yokozawa of Japan Catalyst pitched OBIC Business Consultants, noting it raised prices even after AI disruption concerns spread through its industry. Marc Wallach of Ruane Cunniff backed Money Forward, seeing operating margins reaching 30%.
  • The one bearish call points the other way. Eduardo Marques of Pertento Partners favours Hanwha and its aerospace arm as essentially a weapons factory with 100% upside, while being bearish on Ecopro and Ecopro BM, which he says are expensive with declining profitability, heavy debts and excess capacity.

What Happened?

The inaugural Sohn Tokyo conference took place with Japanese stocks having reached a record earlier this year, supported by inflation boosting pricing power and by governance reforms pushing companies toward better shareholder returns. Masaki Gotoh of TriVista Capital sees potential in Harmonic Drive Systems, whose speed reducers he says drove the industrial robot revolution and could serve the next one in humanoids. Daisuke Nakayama of Polymer Capital picked Orix for its shift from holding assets to generating earnings through external capital and leverage. Soren Aandahl of Blue Orca named Rohm, Chubu Electric Power and TRE Holdings as holders of hidden stakes in Toshiba, arguing an IPO of the delisted conglomerate would produce windfalls material to their current market values even after taxes. Oasis Management founder Seth Fischer continued his campaign at drugstore operator Kusuri no Aoki, demanding an explanation of stock options issued to the Aoki brothers.

Why It Matters?

Two emerging market classification warnings in a week is the development with the widest consequences, and it deserves more attention than any individual stock pitch. Reclassification forces every fund tracking MSCI emerging market indices to sell regardless of valuation, which is why Indonesian equities recorded their worst session in nearly three decades on a warning rather than a decision. Turkey has until June 2027 under a similar process. For anyone holding emerging market exposure, index classification risk is now active in multiple countries simultaneously, and the selling pressure arrives before any decision because investors position ahead of a known deadline. Read collectively rather than individually, the pitches describe a coherent view. Every bullish case rests on pricing power or defence demand: a machine tool maker pivoting to aerospace and defence, a software company raising prices through an AI scare, a financial app expecting 30% margins, a Korean group described as a weapons factory. The single bearish case is an EV battery materials business with excess capacity, heavy debt and falling profitability. That is a market distinguishing between companies that can set prices and companies caught in capacity gluts, which is the same distinction separating TSMC raising wafer prices 3% to 6% from an automotive industry running at 60% utilisation. The Toshiba idea is the most unusual and worth understanding on its own terms. Three listed companies hold stakes in a conglomerate that was taken private after an accounting scandal, and a future listing would crystallise value that is material against their current market capitalisations. Hidden asset situations of this kind are rare in liquid markets, and the catalyst is entirely outside the holders’ control.

What Next?

MSCI’s process in Indonesia is the one to follow given the market reaction, and whether it follows Turkey’s pattern of a freeze and a dated deadline will determine how long the pressure lasts. Any move toward a Toshiba listing is the catalyst for the stub trade. For Japan, the governance reform programme and continued pricing power are what support the market at record levels, and both are testable in results. Treat the individual pitches as what they are: positions being promoted by people who own them.

Affected Tickers and Coins: MSCI, TLK, 8591, 6963, 9502, 012450
