- Quantinuum said it broke a world record in quantum error correction, achieving logical fidelity of 99.9995% on its Helios commercial computer. Error correction is the binding constraint on building a machine capable of breaking current cryptography, and this follows Google reporting last week that its Willow chip produced near-perfect versions of a component such an attack would require.
- Markets rebounded, with the Nasdaq 100 up 1.2% and the S and P 500 up 0.6%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 2.9% and was on track to snap an eight-day losing streak, its longest in 18 years.
- CoreWeave gained 3.0% after Goldman Sachs upgraded it to buy on revenue potential and tight supply. MoffettNathanson analyst Nick Del Deo wrote that the company is not circling the drain, has a number of financing levers, and is an extremely important customer of Nvidia, which he said is willing to use its heft to shape the end market for its products.
- Banks had the worse week and it has gone largely unremarked. The KBW Bank Index recorded its worst weekly losing streak since the 2008 financial crisis and sits about 13% below its August record.
What Happened?
Edison Byzyka of Credent Wealth Management said there will be a buying opportunity every time the market has a day like Friday, viewing large drawdowns in major technology stocks as unwarranted. SpaceX rose 2.0% after Elon Musk pledged to gift a share to every American child, posted shortly after Anthropic said it would set aside a portion of its shares for the public benefit. Tesla rose 1.9% amid continued merger speculation, and Meta slipped. All three report this week. Jefferies fell 4.03% while holding an investor day. Bitcoin briefly rose above $83,000. Bloomberg Intelligence data shows technology is the largest driver of earnings growth, meaning a shaky tech outlook would put broader profit growth at risk.
Why It Matters?
Two independent quantum error-correction records within a week is the development most likely to matter in a year’s time, and it is buried under the market noise. Error correction, not raw qubit count, is what stands between current machines and one capable of running Shor’s algorithm against the cryptography securing bitcoin, ether and most financial infrastructure. Nine companies formed a Quantum Alliance last week warning that 6.4 million bitcoin have exposed public keys, and the obvious objection was that all of them sell quantum-resistant products. Google and Quantinuum do not sell crypto security, and both have now posted results pointing the same direction. The timelines those vendors offered deserve more weight than they did a week ago. The case for CoreWeave is worth reading carefully because of what it rests on. Del Deo’s argument is that the company has financing options and that Nvidia, for whom it is an extremely important customer, will use its influence to shape the market. That is an analyst saying the chip supplier is likely to support the buyer of its chips, which is the same circularity visible when Nvidia’s chief executive publicly reassured markets about CoreWeave’s cost of capital on the day its default swaps hit a record. The bull case and the structural concern are the same fact viewed from opposite ends. The bank story deserves more attention than it is getting. A losing streak worse than anything since 2008, with the index 13% below its August peak, follows Bank of America’s $1.2 billion fine and revenue miss, JPMorgan missing on both lines for the first time in years, and Federal Reserve data showing the highest household debt burdens since 2010. Technology is absorbing the attention while the financial sector quietly repricesated.
What Next?
Meta, Tesla and SpaceX report this week and Bloomberg Intelligence notes technology drives most of the index’s earnings growth, so these results carry weight beyond their own sectors. Watch whether the semiconductor rebound holds or whether this is a bounce within a downtrend, given the index just recorded its longest losing run since 2008. CoreWeave’s credit default swaps remain the better signal than its share price. On quantum, further error-correction results are the variable determining how seriously the cryptographic timelines should be taken.
