Amazon Is Adding 20% More Holiday Workers While Online Spending Grows 6.7%
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Amazon will hire more than 300,000 holiday workers, up 20% from a year ago, with temporary staff earning an average of $20 an hour. Those who stay through January working at least 30 hours a week receive medical benefits, which is a substantive retention incentive given employer health costs are rising 8% next year.
  • The hiring is growing three times faster than the demand it serves. Adobe projects US online spending of $275.1 billion in November and December, up 6.7%, and EMarketer puts Amazon’s share at almost 40 cents of every online dollar.
  • The likely explanation is in the article without being drawn out. UPS has been reducing Amazon package volume to focus on more profitable business, so Amazon appears to be hiring to bring in-house the capacity its carrier is withdrawing.
  • Everyone else is doing the opposite. Seasonal retail hiring is expected to fall below last year’s 450,000, which would be the lowest since 2008, with Walmart and Target again declining to announce plans and logistics hiring roughly flat.

What Happened?

Andy Challenger of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas said almost every hiring announcement in the past three years has been smaller and more surgical than the pre-pandemic approach. UPS separately announced plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal workers, roughly in line with previous years.

Why It Matters?

A 20% increase in seasonal headcount at a company deploying warehouse automation at scale is worth pausing on, because it runs against the automation narrative. Three explanations fit: Amazon is taking further share beyond the 40% it already holds, faster delivery promises require more labour per order, or it is absorbing volume that UPS no longer wants to carry. The third is documented in the article and is the most straightforward. Carriers optimising for margin are handing their largest customer a reason to build parallel capacity, which is a long-term shift in who controls last-mile delivery rather than a seasonal decision. For UPS shareholders the question is whether the margin gained exceeds the volume permanently lost. The broader hiring picture is the economic signal and it is poor. The lowest seasonal retail recruitment since 2008, with two of the largest retailers declining even to publish plans, is a collective judgement about expected demand from companies with the best visibility into it. That belongs alongside consumer sentiment’s current conditions index at an all-time low, Federal Reserve data showing the highest share of households with debt payments above 40% of income since 2010, and employer health costs rising 8% against 3% income growth. Retailers are not hiring because they do not expect the spending. The benefits offer deserves more attention than the wage. Twenty dollars an hour is a competitive but unremarkable rate against rural inflation at 4% and gasoline at $4.33 a gallon. Medical coverage for seasonal workers who stay is materially valuable when a family can face nearly $32,000 a year for a bare-bones marketplace plan, and it is a cheaper retention tool for Amazon than wage increases because it converts temporary workers into permanent ones at the margin.

What Next?

Holiday sales data will show whether Amazon’s 20% increase reflected share gains or capacity replacement, and the share of its own deliveries handled in-house is the measure that distinguishes them. Watch whether Walmart and Target disclose hiring later or stay silent, since continued silence is itself informative. UPS reports soon and the trade-off between Amazon volume and margin is the line to examine. For the consumer picture, seasonal hiring below 450,000 is a forecast of demand from the companies best placed to judge it.
