Two Traders Say the Bitcoin Bounce Is Shorts Closing, and the Flow Data Agrees

Crypto Startups Are Still Being Funded at Last Year’s Pace. Almost No New Crypto Funds Are Being Raised

  • Bitcoin rose as much as 2.4% to $84,737 as a rally sparked by SpaceX earnings lifted risk appetite across markets, helped by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency finalising a measure for payment stablecoin issuers.
  • Practitioners describe the move as mechanical rather than fundamental. Himanshu Sahay of Arch Lending said the longs were cleared out on the way down and much of the bounce was shorts closing, which is positioning resetting rather than new leverage. Jasper De Maere of Wintermute said it still feels like a recovery rather than the start of a rally, though that could change with momentum toward $87,000.
  • The flow data points the same way. About $2.3 billion entered spot bitcoin funds over the past month with BlackRock’s IBIT absorbing the majority, and Glassnode notes the inflows have not come with heightened trading volume, writing that inflows repeating on rising volume would show demand broadening beyond a single day.
  • Leverage is rebuilding. Open interest in perpetual futures is rising again after weeks of deleveraging, which recreates the conditions behind the roughly $19 billion liquidation cascade earlier this month.

What Happened?

Options positioning is directionally optimistic, with demand clustered around call contracts at $95,000, $90,000 and $100,000 strikes according to Deribit. Daniel Reis-Faria, chief executive of ZeroStack, said there is plenty of fuel in the tank for a further move higher. Questions persist over the sustainability of the AI buildout.

Why It Matters?

A rally driven by short covering has a natural ceiling, and that is the most useful thing in this report. When positions that were short are closed, the buying stops, because the bid came from traders exiting rather than investors accumulating. Sahay says that explicitly and De Maere says it more cautiously, and the independent flow analysis agrees: money entering one fund without a corresponding rise in trading volume describes a small number of large transactions rather than broad participation. For anyone treating the bounce as confirmation that the October lows held, the mechanism matters more than the price. The concentration in a single product is worth keeping in view. Over the past month BlackRock’s fund took most of roughly $2.3 billion of inflows, and on Monday it took $665 million while the rest of the complex lost about $139 million, with every other issuer recording no net flows at all. That pattern is consistent with one or a few institutions allocating, which is real demand but not the retail and advisory participation that would indicate the asset class broadening. Glassnode’s test, inflows repeating on rising volume, is the right one to apply over coming sessions. The rebuilding of perpetual futures leverage is the risk that deserves attention after what happened this month. A cascade liquidated roughly $19 billion in a single session because leverage had accumulated through a long calm period, and open interest climbing again means that fragility is being restored. Recovering from a leverage-driven collapse by rebuilding leverage is how the next one becomes possible.

What Next?

De Maere identifies $87,000 as the level that would distinguish a recovery from a rally. Watch whether ETF inflows continue alongside rising volume, which is the test Glassnode sets and the one that would show demand spreading beyond a single issuer. Open interest in perpetual futures is the leverage indicator. The OCC’s stablecoin measure is a further regulatory development in a month that has also brought European restrictions on non-compliant stablecoins and a tokenized equity venue facing issuer objections.

Affected Tickers and Coins: BTC, SPCX, IBIT, BLK
