Half of Nasdaq Biotech Stocks Have Under Six Months of Cash, and a 5% 10-Year Yield Is Making Investors Notice

Biotech Reverse Merger Surge: 6x Jump in 2026 as Startups Exploit Pandemic IPO Hangover; Sophisticated Investors Legitimize Fast-Track Route Over Traditional Listings Despite Dwindling Shell Supply

  • The Nasdaq Biotech Index has slumped 3.8% since its August 19 peak, while the US 10-year yield jumped nearly half a percentage point and briefly hit 5.34%, its highest since 2002. The gauge is still up roughly 25% this year, but the pullback signals that soaring yields are spooking equity investors.
  • Less than a quarter of the index’s members have been profitable over the past year, and about half have fewer than six months of cash to cover expenses, according to Bloomberg data. Higher rates raise the bar for companies that may be years away from generating revenue.
  • Big winners have masked the strain, with Moderna up more than 700% this year on positive skin cancer trial data with Merck and Revolution Medicines up more than 140% after a pancreatic cancer approval. Caribou Biosciences, by contrast, is cutting two programs and exploring strategic alternatives after its shares fell more than 60%.
  • Gabelli’s Elena Meng and RBC analysts remain constructive, with RBC expecting biotech to benefit if money rotates out of tech. Baird’s Mike Perrone warned that higher rates will keep generalist investors on the sidelines.

What Happened?

Investors are turning cautious on biotech as a rapid rise in Treasury yields dents the appeal of companies often seen as all-or-nothing bets on breakthrough treatments, Bloomberg reported. The Nasdaq Biotech Index tracks nearly 250 companies and has fallen since its August peak as the 10-year yield climbed above 5%. Yields have risen this year on soaring energy prices and aggressive corporate borrowing to fund AI projects. White Manna Capital’s William Soliman said early-stage biotechs face a harder pitch because investors now have a much higher risk-free alternative.

Why It Matters?

Biotech is one of the purest long-duration equity trades, since much of a company’s value rests on payoffs that may be years away. When the risk-free rate rises, investors demand more compensation for clinical, regulatory and financing risk, as Soliman noted. The cash data makes this more than a valuation issue, because companies with short runways may have to raise money on worse terms or cut programs, as Caribou has done. Concerns about rising rates are already pushing investors out of equity funds and into safer assets.

What’s Next?

The 10-year yield is the main macro signal for the sector, and relief there would ease pressure on funding-dependent names. Watch financing activity, since dilutive raises or more strategic reviews would confirm the cash squeeze. Clinical-trial outcomes remain a swing factor, and Perrone said bad news from a few big names would dampen enthusiasm across the group. A fading AI trade could also deliver the rotation into biotech that RBC expects.
