Disclosure: Bullish, which participated in this token purchase and is separately working with Anvil, is the parent company of CoinDesk, which reported the story and whose research arm produced the report describing the product. Readers should weigh the reporting accordingly.
- Founders Fund led a $5 million purchase of ANVL governance tokens, with participation from Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish and Protoscale Capital. Terms and valuation were not disclosed, and Anvil said the tokens came from its existing treasury rather than new issuance. The token has a circulating supply of 80 billion out of 100 billion total.
- The product is structurally different from conventional DeFi lending. Rather than letting users deposit collateral and borrow against it while paying interest and risking liquidation, Anvil reserves collateral to guarantee a financial commitment without creating a loan. Its core offering is an onchain letter of credit, where assets are set aside to guarantee payment and can be claimed if the commitment is not met, with no interest owed simply for the guarantee to exist.
- The scale is small. Anvil holds about $14 million in total value locked, against roughly $56 billion across DeFi lending protocols where Aave and Morpho are among the largest, making it around 0.025% of the category.
- Anvil Research Labs launched a software development kit allowing companies to integrate the protocol without writing blockchain code, and named Consensus, Bitcoin.com and payments company Flexa among partners already using or integrating the tooling.
What Happened?
Joey Krug, a partner at Founders Fund, said businesses need assurance that commitments behind payments and credit will be honoured, that Anvil lets them secure those commitments with verifiable digital asset collateral, and that the new development kit makes integration easier. The protocol was developed by the Acronym Foundation, was bootstrapped and is fully open source. The tokens purchased confer governance rights, allowing holders to participate in decisions about the protocol development.
Why It Matters?
The primitive is the interesting part and it is distinct from most of what gets built in this sector. A letter of credit is a performance guarantee rather than financing: the issuer sets aside value to assure a counterparty that an obligation will be met, and no borrowing occurs unless the guarantee is called. Replicating that onchain addresses a real problem in trade finance and payments, where counterparty assurance currently depends on banks and the associated cost and friction. That is a more defensible use for crypto collateral than overcollateralised borrowing, which has limited application outside crypto trading. Set against that, the numbers describe an early-stage project. Fourteen million dollars of value locked in a category holding fifty-six billion means adoption has barely begun, and prominent investors buying governance tokens is a bet on the idea rather than evidence the idea is working. The disclosure that tokens came from treasury with terms and valuation withheld is also worth noting, because $5 million against an 80 billion circulating supply tells a reader nothing about the implied valuation of the protocol. Anyone treating the participation of well-known funds as a valuation signal has no figure to work from. One structural point for investors generally: governance tokens are not equity. They confer influence over protocol decisions, not a claim on cash flows or assets, and the two are regularly conflated in coverage of these transactions. Understanding which instrument a fund has bought matters when assessing what the investment represents.
What Next?
Total value locked is the measure that will show whether the software development kit converts interest into usage, since ease of integration is the stated barrier being removed. Watch whether named partners including Flexa and Bitcoin.com move from integrating to transacting at meaningful volume. Bullish exploration of the protocol for its own operations would be the most concrete institutional validation, and also the one most entangled with the reporting. For the broader category, whether onchain guarantee instruments find use in trade finance is the question, and it sits alongside parallel efforts including tokenized trade finance stablecoins in Europe. Nothing here needs to be acted on quickly given the current scale.
