Omnicom Executive Alex Lubar Jumps to PE-Backed Consultancy Fundamentalco
Alex Lubar, the global chief executive of DDB Worldwide, has stepped down from Omnicom to take the top role at Fundamentalco, a fast-growing brand strategy firm that specializes in advising private-equity firms and their portfolio companies.
The move comes as Omnicom prepares to close its acquisition of Interpublic Group, a deal that will create the world’s largest advertising conglomerate. Lubar’s departure leaves DDB without clarity on succession, though the agency says remaining leadership will maintain client focus.
Fundamentalco was founded in 2024 by Jonny Bauer after his brand-strategy tenure at Blackstone. Under Bauer, the firm helped Blackstone and its portfolio companies craft brand identities meant to strengthen enterprise value—not just marketing presence. Bauer now becomes executive founder, with Lubar reporting directly to him.
Brand value, Bauer argues, must permeate operations, leadership, and culture. “A company’s brand should touch every aspect of the business,” he said.
Since its launch, Fundamentalco has built a formidable client roster across private equity and global enterprises. Blackstone remains its largest client, but the firm also works with Bain Capital, Vista Equity Partners, Thrive Capital, and brands such as Visa, Hilton, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year, revenue is on track to exceed $20 million, up 63% year over year.
The firm’s 35-person team includes Executive Creative Director Jenna Lyons, formerly of J.Crew, along with senior strategists from Droga5 and other top agencies.
To support future growth, Quilvest Capital Partners has agreed to take a minority stake, providing expansion capital.
For Lubar, the appeal lies in the shift from traditional agency operations to working directly with CEOs, boards, and investment partners—positions with deeper strategic impact. “It’s a new kind of business,” he said, emphasizing the opportunity to influence decisions at the highest levels.
Before joining Fundamentalco, Lubar oversaw a global network of 10,000 employees at DDB, serving clients from Amazon to McDonald’s to the U.S. Army. His move marks a broader trend of top agency leaders shifting into PE-backed strategic consulting roles as brand becomes a core lever of enterprise value creation.
