Goldman’s Desk Says AI Credit Spreads Are at Yearly Wides, and Last Time They Were Here Equities Were 15% Lower
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Goldman Sachs traders wrote Friday that AI credit spreads and hyperscalers specifically are at the widest levels of the year, and that the last time spreads were nearly this high the underlying equities were 15% lower. They added that AI capital expenditure has likely peaked and that financing, sustainability and returns on capital have become the debate rather than the next near-term earnings revision.
  • The trigger was growth that would be spectacular anywhere else. CNBC reported Anthropic’s third quarter revenue at $16.8 billion against $11.6 billion in the second quarter, an increase of roughly 45% in three months, and investors treated it as a flag on the pace of the buildout.
  • Last week was the worst in months. The S and P 500 fell nearly 2%, its largest weekly decline since late June, the Nasdaq dropped 4.5% ending a four-week run, and CoreWeave lost more than 25%, its biggest weekly fall since November 2025, with credit default swaps at distress levels.
  • Monday opened with buyers returning. Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1.16%, S and P futures 0.58%, Intel gained more than 4% premarket on a JPMorgan upgrade and CoreWeave 3%.

What Happened?

Goldman’s desk noted pessimism increasing, low market breadth and the second-highest volume of puts traded on Friday, behind only June. Treasury yields eased, with the 10-year at 5.0854%, the 30-year at 5.4242% and the 2-year broadly flat at 4.7315%. European markets fell, with the CAC 40 down 1.35% leading losses after nationwide demonstrations over living costs turned violent at the weekend, the DAX down 1.1% and the FTSE 100 down 0.94%. In Asia the Kospi rose 1.76% while the Nikkei fell 0.62%. Ukraine struck an oil terminal in St Petersburg on Sunday and ship attacks in the Persian Gulf have increased, with longer-dated oil futures rising on expectations that energy infrastructure disruption persists well into 2027, even as spot Brent and WTI traded slightly lower. Meta and Tesla report this week.

Why It Matters?

The spread observation is the most useful thing a trading desk has said about this episode. If AI credit spreads sit at levels last seen when the equities were 15% lower, then either credit is too pessimistic or the equities have not finished adjusting. That is a specific, testable dislocation rather than a sentiment statement, and it gives investors something to position around. Goldman’s second point is the larger one: the debate has moved from quarterly earnings revisions to financing, sustainability and returns on capital, which is a different analytical framework and a harder one for companies to satisfy. Anthropic’s numbers show where the bar now sits. Revenue rising 45% in a single quarter to $16.8 billion is extraordinary growth by any normal measure, and it was received as evidence that the buildout may be slowing. When that result disappoints, expectations embedded in prices are the problem rather than the businesses themselves. For readers assessing AI exposure, this is the clearest available calibration of what is already assumed. The oil term structure deserves attention because it is new. Spot prices eased while longer-dated futures rose, which means the market is now pricing disruption as a durable condition extending into 2027 rather than a temporary interruption. Ukraine striking a terminal in St Petersburg and renewed Gulf shipping attacks are the immediate causes. A persistent energy premium changes the inflation arithmetic the Federal Reserve is working with, and the committee meets next week. France is the other situation worth watching. Violent demonstrations over living costs, with the CAC leading European declines, arrive on top of French bond spreads at euro-crisis levels and a government issuing shorter because dealers report weak demand for long-dated paper.

What Next?

Meta and Tesla report this week and both are tests of whether results can stabilise sentiment, with margins mattering more than headline figures. Watch whether AI credit spreads narrow alongside the equity rebound or stay wide, since Goldman’s framing makes that the key divergence. The Federal Reserve meets on October 27 and 28 with roughly a 29% chance of a move priced. Oil’s forward curve is the cleanest indicator of whether the market expects the supply disruption to persist, and French political stability has become a European market variable rather than only a fiscal one.
