Pentagon–Anthropic Feud Escalates as AI Policy Clash Threatens Defense Contracts

  • Anthropic is finalizing a roughly $1.5 billion joint venture with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs, and General Atlantic, with an announcement expected as soon as Monday.
  • Anthropic, Blackstone, and Hellman & Friedman are each expected to invest approximately $300 million; Goldman Sachs is set to contribute around $150 million as a founding investor.
  • The new entity will act as a consulting arm, helping private-equity-backed companies integrate Claude AI tools across their operations — a market both Anthropic and OpenAI are racing to dominate.
  • Anthropic is eyeing a public listing as soon as this year, with revenue surging recently on the strength of its Claude Code coding tool.

What Happened?

Anthropic is closing in on a major Wall Street partnership that would create a new joint venture designed to accelerate AI adoption inside private-equity portfolio companies. The deal anchors Anthropic alongside Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman at roughly $300 million each, with Goldman Sachs contributing about $150 million and General Atlantic and other firms rounding out the $1.5 billion commitment. The new company will function as a consulting arm — teaching businesses how to deploy Anthropic’s Claude AI tools to improve efficiency and cut costs. An announcement is expected as soon as Monday.

Why It Matters?

Private-equity-backed companies represent a particularly attractive market for AI vendors: PE sponsors are already laser-focused on operational efficiency and cost reduction, making them receptive buyers for automation tools. Anthropic — widely regarded as the enterprise leader in the AI space — is moving to lock in that advantage before OpenAI, which is separately in talks to form a rival PE-focused joint venture. The deal also signals Anthropic’s maturation from a research-centric startup into a full-scale commercial enterprise, reinforced by its consideration of a public listing and recent revenue surge from Claude Code.

What’s Next?

Watch for the formal announcement Monday and details on governance structure, revenue-sharing arrangements, and which portfolio companies get early access. OpenAI’s parallel PE joint venture talks will be a key competitive storyline — whichever firm signs more flagship PE clients in the next six months will likely set the enterprise AI standard. Anthropic’s IPO timeline is also a watch item: a public listing in 2026 would make this joint venture a pivotal proof point for institutional investors evaluating the company’s commercial momentum.
