LIV Golf Wants to Pay Players in Equity After Saudi Arabia Walked Away, and the Players Are Declining

Note: Rory McIlroy is a leading PGA Tour player and a longstanding public critic of LIV Golf, so his assessment of a competitor’s prospects is interested commentary.

  • LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month after Saudi Arabia ended its multibillion-dollar financial support, and is attempting to restructure into what it calls LIV 2.0, a plan that includes paying players with equity rather than the large guaranteed contracts that originally attracted them.
  • That mechanism is failing publicly. Jon Rahm said last week he would not stay, and McIlroy said that with every passing day another former LIV player announces they will not rejoin.
  • The credit arm of BC Partners has committed as much as $300 million, potentially providing the funding for a 2027 season, which is a distressed bet on media rights, tournament infrastructure and brand rather than on the current roster.
  • McIlroy said it will be very difficult for the league to emerge from Chapter 11, and that even if it does, it will not be the threat to the traditional order of the game it once appeared to be.

What Happened?

LIV disrupted professional golf when it launched a few years ago by luring players from the PGA Tour with large contracts, but enthusiasm faded and the Saudi backers pulled funding. McIlroy, a six-time major champion, also argued India could become a significant growth market for golf, citing rising fan interest, a growing middle class and the scale of the country’s sports audience. He contrasted roughly 20 million US television viewers for the Masters with average audiences in the hundreds of millions for Indian Premier League cricket matches, and suggested golf could follow cricket’s path from elite pastime to mass audience.

Why It Matters?

The equity-for-cash swap at the centre of this restructuring is a pattern worth recognising well beyond sport. LIV’s original proposition to players was certainty: guaranteed money regardless of performance, funded by a sponsor indifferent to returns. LIV 2.0 proposes replacing that with equity in a company emerging from bankruptcy, which inverts the offer entirely and asks the talent to carry the risk the sponsor has declined to keep carrying. In any business whose value sits in people rather than assets, that exchange only works if those people believe in the enterprise, and the public refusals indicate they do not. Anyone structuring a restructuring around retaining key individuals should note how quickly this one has unravelled. The BC Partners commitment is the financial substance and it belongs in the same category as other distressed situations in your reading this month. A credit fund committing up to $300 million to a league in Chapter 11 whose stars are departing is lending against assets rather than a going concern, which is the position Ares found itself in with TalkTalk, recovering roughly half of a £1 billion exposure despite climbing to the top of the capital structure. The value here sits in media rights and brand, and both depend on the players who are leaving. The sovereign withdrawal is the other notable element. Saudi Arabia abandoning a multibillion-dollar commitment mid-project is a single data point rather than a trend, but it is a reminder that capital deployed for strategic rather than financial reasons can be withdrawn for the same reasons, and that counterparties relying on it hold no contractual claim on the strategy continuing.

What Next?

Whether LIV exits Chapter 11 and fields a 2027 season is the immediate question, and the BC Partners money makes it possible without making it likely. Watch how many players commit to LIV 2.0, since the equity proposition is the restructuring’s foundation and each departure weakens it. For the PGA Tour, McIlroy has said LIV players should be welcomed back, which would effectively conclude the dispute. On the growth argument, India is a genuine addressable market given the audience numbers McIlroy cites, though converting cricket viewership into golf participation is a longer project than a single tournament suggests.
