Anthropic Eyes $900 Billion Valuation — Potentially Surpassing OpenAI as World’s Most Valuable AI Startup

Pentagon–Anthropic Feud Escalates as AI Policy Clash Threatens Defense Contracts

  • Anthropic is considering funding offers that would value the company at more than $900 billion, potentially making it the world’s most valuable AI startup and eclipsing OpenAI’s $852 billion valuation.
  • The round would more than double Anthropic’s current $350 billion valuation — the price at which both Google and Amazon invested earlier this year.
  • The fundraising push coincides with Anthropic’s need for more computing infrastructure to meet surging demand, and comes ahead of a potential IPO as soon as October.
  • Anthropic had previously turned down inbound offers at $800 billion+; the new discussions represent a significant step-up in ambition.

What Happened?

Anthropic is weighing a new funding round that would value the company at more than $900 billion, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter. If completed at that level, it would make Anthropic the world’s most valuable AI startup, surpassing OpenAI’s most recent $852 billion valuation. The discussions are early-stage, with no offers accepted yet — but the willingness to entertain them marks a significant departure from Anthropic’s earlier stance of rebuffing inbound proposals at $800 billion or more. Google committed $10 billion at a $350 billion valuation in April, with up to $30 billion more tied to performance targets; Amazon separately invested $5 billion at the same valuation with $20 billion more planned.

Why It Matters?

Anthropic’s trajectory from founding in 2021 to a potential $900 billion valuation in just five years reflects the extraordinary pace at which AI infrastructure is being valued by markets. The company’s Claude models have gained significant enterprise traction, and its restricted Mythos model — capable of autonomous cyberattack and defense operations — has made it arguably the most consequential AI company in national security circles. But the valuation also reflects a critical need: Anthropic is capacity-constrained, and more capital means more computing power to serve a growing customer base. The race to a trillion-dollar AI startup valuation is now a two-horse contest between Anthropic and OpenAI, with both companies likely heading toward IPOs this year.

What’s Next?

A deal at $900 billion+ would dramatically reset the AI valuation landscape and put further pressure on OpenAI — which is itself racing toward an IPO while dealing with reports of missed revenue and user growth targets. Anthropic is simultaneously navigating a fraught relationship with the White House over Mythos access and a potential October IPO timeline. Whether the new round closes at or above $900 billion will depend on how quickly Anthropic can demonstrate that its revenue growth justifies the step-up — and whether investors see its model advantage as durable against Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s latest releases.
